Web Design feedback request
If it’s not too much trouble we’d appreciate some feedback on our new homepage comp, we’re looking to go up-market and expand our reach from regional (Southeastern US) to national and any opinions, good or bad, are welcome.

Here’s a good way to tell the economy is (finally) rebounding: more and more people are calling us wanting to get their websites ranked better on search engines. Regardless of your marketing budget, not having a strong presence on search engines is no longer an option.
When your website doesn’t rank well, not only is it your loss, but to make matters worse it’s your...

A Real Web Design Application →
cameronmoll:
This is a very thorough overview by Jason Santa Maria of the current tools available to web designers, their shortcomings, and the friction and waste created by transferring work from tool to browser. Jason’s argument toward the end of his article will certainly continue a debate that’s already raging:
A web designer jumping into the browser before tackling the creative and...

IM Chat: Client revisions on a comp
Me: so you think that comp we did will work?
Designer: IMO this looks ok. Maybe we should even make it the same size as the comp
Me: what all would that take?
Designer: an act of god and the sacrifice of a small goat
Me: k
Me: I got a goat in the truck
Designer: we could make it as a graphic instead of text, is that worth a try?
Designer: roflmao

IM Chat: Out of scope
Email from a Client: I am in the process of making the latest copy edits and a few subpage additions (don’t worry, it’s just a few)
Lead Designer: are we allowing "Don't worry" as justification to do out of scope work now?
Me: not sure
Lead Designer: maybe we should reply with "We're going to add some additional charges to our contract for this (don't worry, it's just a few)"
Me: haha

Photogenic Web Design
I’ve noticed a trend lately of websites that incorporate some pretty incredible photography as a central part of their design. We all know the cliche “A picture is worth a thousand words”, and not only is it true, but I’ve realized it’s especially accurate when it comes to current web design.
When photography is used well on a website it just naturally...

Basecamp homepage re-design →
Great post on SVN, I always liked how the homepage used multiple folds but kinda thought it was a tad too busy. This is much cleaner and intuitive and I like the illustrated top fold better then old screenshot-based version.
Pretty cool how they annotated the re-design process too.

Clients say the darnedest things #1
I’ve been kicking around the idea of creating an ongoing series of posts that chronicle my interactions with our customers. I’ve seen these types of posts on other design/tech blogs and by and large they’re cynical, smarmy and downright negative. So I’m going to start up a nice one.
I’m sure there’s some exceptions out there but as far as I know, every...

Apple fixin' to fix the new iPhone (Mashable) →
My life revolves around building website applications as that’s how I make a living. Because of that I know how prone to error they are so I’m naturally inclined to take up for Apple with all the issues they’re having with the new iPhone.
Having said that, it’s becoming hard for me to be cool with how they’re handling all these issues.
