Most of these indicators are actually on the screen for just seconds, but that is sufficient time to quiet a user’s doubts and ensure they know things are working. It feels great to click through the app and always feel like you know what’s happening, that things are working.
Really getting into designing experiences for mobile and in true 37 Signals fashion this post is full of live examples with tons of quality insight. I’ve learned that speed and responsiveness are 2 very different components of design with responsiveness being the one you have considerably more control of. This post definitely illustrates that philosophy.

…the 80/20 rule, when considered in the context of website and web app design can have a profound effect on the user experience, and ultimately on the effectiveness of the content or functionality of your website or web app.
Nice post, especially like the section on mobile design and how you should design a website for that experience before considering anything else. Taking a site or app and really distilling it down to only the essentials as they relate to converting goals (both for the site and the end user) is a good approach and one I’m not sure we consider often enough.
